When it comes to whisky drinking, one has much to chose from. Four different types of whisky are produced in Scotland and there are many different brands that make different types of whisky. There really is a huge choice of flavours and types for the whisky drinker. Here we will take a look at one of the most famous whisky distilleries in Scotland, that of Balvenie. Core Range

  • Founders Reserve 10 year old
  • Doublewood 12 year old
  • Single Barrel 15 year old
  • Port Wood 21 year old

Signature Malt

The signature malt of the Balvenie distillery is the ‘Doublewood 12 year old', which certainly has a distinctive taste. If you think honey an fruit sounds like the kind of taste that you would enjoy then you won't be dissapointed with this whisky. The combination of tastes of rich fruits and Speyside honey come together perfectly in this whisky to form a taste that will have you wanting more.

The Distillery

The Balvenie distillery is located in Dufftown, Banffshire, in the Speyside region of Scotland and is the sister distillery to the Glenfiddich one in the same location. If Glenfiddich is one of the worlds most renonwned distilleries, what the Balvenie distillery lacks in scale and quantity, it more than makes up for it with quality. Balvenie, owned by William Grant, can best be dsecribed as being a whisky lover's whisky. It is fast growing a repuation of sheer quality and yet the distillery likes to produce its whisky in the 'old-fashioned way'.

The Balvenie distillery, like many of the distilleries in Scotland, offers a tour of their distillery. The tour lasts two and a half hours and needs to be pre-booked and is restricted to only 8 people at a time. The tour starts with a trip round the Balvenie distillery, including a look at one of the few remaining floor maltings in existence, and ends with a tasting session held in the old cottage that was once lived in by the then distillery manager.

Special mention must go to two different whiskies produced at the Balvenie distillery. The 30 year old whisky is a world class whisky that is dressed in ermine. The Port Wood 21 year old is one of the best examples of whisky produced and finished in port pipe.
